Contra Costa College New Science
Project Description
The 55,000 sq ft Science Center at Contra Costa College consolidates various science departments, such as biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, and engineering, under one roof. This state-of-the-art facility aims to provide an equitable STEM education for underrepresented students and foster cross-disciplinary interactions through classrooms, teaching laboratories, and faculty offices. The facility also features a planetarium and tutoring center.
The Science Center is the first in the district to be designed as Zero Net Energy (ZNE) ready, following an integrated and sustainability-focused design process. The facility aims to inspire future generations from diverse backgrounds and interests by celebrating science and showcasing it on display.
The facility features an all-electric HVAC system that utilizes a four-pipe VAV system with energy recovery coils. It comprises three (3)65-ton Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) which offer heating and cooling to the VAVs and FCUs in the facility. An AHU delivers tempered ventilation air to the occupied spaces. The energy from the exhausted air is harnessed to moderate the AHU supply air through energy recovery coils.
